Too old for implants?

December 18th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

My grandma lost her teeth at a young age and she has been wearing dentures since. Now she is 75 and needs new dentures. I was wondering if dental implants would be a better alternative or is she too old for a procedure like that?

I guess it’s up to her. Implants are horrendously expensive – at least a couple of thousand per tooth. For a mouth full of them, it might be cheaper to refinance a house :) . It’s not really a question of age, but a question of whether at her age she really wants to spend that kind of money.

Plus they involve embedding the base of the implant into the bone, allowing that to heal, then placing the teeth. For a mouth full of teeth the process can take more than a year.

****Dentists like your first respondent should be approached with great care – his statistics do not stand up to scrutiny as modern dental implants have not been around long enough, or been implanted in enough patients for such long timeframes, for such statistics to be given any credence.

Plus a quick google search of service providers reveals that the life expectancy of implants is 10-30 years anyway.

Fact is, implants are only one option. There is nothing wrong with dentures, it’s just that implants are better. But again, she has to weigh that against the extreme cost and months of discomfort. At her age, she might just think life is too short and spend the money enjoying herself instead. Hell, that’s what I’d do!

If you think you are too old to consider the alternatives to dentures, consider this: At age 65, a female who has implants has 19% chance of living an additional 30 years, a 40% chance of living an additional 25 years and a nearly 10% chance of living to age 100! QUALITY of life plays an enormous role in how you actually live your life.

No she is not too old for implants. Although it is best she has a consultation with a dentist to check her bone levels, medical conditions (osteoporosis) and her general suitability for implants.
She may have a denture over implants abutments, which mean that implants are fixed into the jaw bone onto which the dentures are clipped into. These allow better stablity and more comfort. She will also be able to enjoy a better diet which equates to a healthy and longer life!

there really is no age u have to be to get implants. implants are much much better then dentures as they will last longer and are stronger. it just all depends on how much bone structure you have and how healthy your gums are weather you can get implants or not
