Adjusting To My New Dentures
New dentures – how do I adjust to them?
I just got upper dentures 3 days ago. It took me hours to learn to swallow liquids and now I can still only swallow liquids. I’m trying to eat soft foods like eggs, but anything other than ice cream, which melts in my mouth, I just can’t swallow. I even have trouble washing small bites of egg down. I’m losing about 2 pounds a day & I’m only taking in about 700-800 calories a day even with liquid supplements. I need to go back to work in a few days. How do I learn to swallow solids?
Learning to eat with dentures takes time. Are you gagging? It sounds to me like you might be afraid to swallow and your subconscious is closing your throat. I would discuss this with the dentist as soon as you can.
In the mean time try using a product like Ensure or other dietary supplements, milk shakes, pudding and jello should also work. Part of the problem may be some of sensory areas of your mouth are now covered so they are not getting input from the food. It is a slow process.
Feel free to ask me anything, I’ve had mine for 9 years.
